Greetings, welcome to the underground source for NFL 2010 Draft Coverage.
Jared's Mock Draft
1st round
Last Updated: 4-10-10
1. St Louis Rams: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
He is the obvious choice for the Rams here. They have not had a franchise quarterback since Kurt Warner. Bradford had an amazing pro-day, some people even say that he had the best pro-day ever. During his college career he injured his shoulder 2 times. Usually one big injury is a red light but not with an amazing prospect like this. I would be very surprised if they don't have a deal down before the draft.
2. Detroit Lions: Ndamakung Suh, DT, Nebraska
Suh is widely considered the best player in the draft. The Lions desperately need a Left Tackle but pass on Okung with this selection. Suh has great speed off the line and an even bigger push to get into the backfield. Like Bradford the injury question pops up because he had two major knee injuries. Suh may have blown that question away with his outstanding play, but you can never know for sure with scouts.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
McCoy is the second of one of the best DT classes ever. McCoy is considered better than Suh by some professionals but I don't believe the hype. McCoy has a great push to the inside and can make any linebackers look good with his gigantic holes. McCoy fits greatly with the Tampa 2 system and the Buccaneers would be happy if he falls to them. If the Lions were to take Okung, I would still keep this selection because I believe he is the perfect fit for them. Unlike the previous two prospects, McCoy doesn't have an injury history.
4. Washington Redskins: Russell Okung, LT, Oklahoma State
Shanahan has the best tackle in the draft fall right into his lap with this pick. Okung is a monster when it comes to measurables, and his intangibles are out of this world. At 6'5 307 pounds he is an excellent pass blocker who is very capable of run blocking at the next level. The Redskins may go from worst to first in the NFC East with many key additions. They now have a franchise quarterback in McNabb and can get a potential pro-bowl left tackle here with Okung. They can also get some extra early-mid round picks from trading Campbell if thats what they decide to do. There is talk that Trent Williams can be the pick here instead of Okung but I think it is a smokescreen. I could see that happening if Okung is not here but if he is, I think this is a lock.
5. Kansas City Chiefs: Brian Bulaga, LT, Iowa
Surprised? So am I. I put Bulaga here instead of Williams because the aforementioned is better run blocker. The Chiefs are showing all signs that they are becoming a run first team. Jamal Charles is showing that he was worth a first round pick and that he can be an every down back. They also added Thomas Jones who will most likely get his carries in short yardage situations and near the goal line. But back to Bulaga. Brian is a great overall blocker who can do it all. When his arms were measured so short his stock went down a bit. But even if his arms are too short he can go to right tackle as a backup plan. Cassel will thank his lucky stars for this selection so that maybe he can stand still instead of running around like a chicken with his head cut off.
6. Seattle Seahawks: Trent Williams, LT, Oklahoma
Williams is the best zone blocking tackle in this draft, but thats it. Williams is an athletic tackle who will bust if he doesn't go to a zone blocking scheme. Similar to Bruce Campbell, Williams had a very good combine and climbed up many boards. This pick could also be Eric Berry but The Seahawks have a bigger need at Tackle than safety.
7. Cleveland Browns: Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
Berry is my number one player in this draft. He is amazing in almost everything that a safety does. He can play both S and FS, and there is word that he may play corner. He is widely compared to Ed Reed and if you have a chance to draft Ed Reed, you take it. After the Sheldon Brown trade in which they got him from the Eagles, corner isn't as much as a need. So if this pick came down to Haden and Berry the pick is definitely Berry. Berry may not be available at 7 but if this were to happen, the Browns should pull the trigger... fast!
8. Oakland Raiders: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida
Pierre-Paul had a better combine than the other front runner for this pick, Bruce Campbell. That shouldn't matter for any pick except for this one. Al Davis loves to take players who stand out at the combine. Pierre-Paul is a very good DE/OLB who plays even faster on the field than he does on the track. Running an unofficial 4.64 40 at 6'6 and 260, thats saying something.
9. Buffalo Bills: Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
The Bills don't have a number one receiver. Lee Evans is a solid number two but putting him at one would be stretching it. This pick would be any of the top three tackle but being that they are not here, there is no need to reach. Bryant is top 5 talent but his off the field issues lower him a few spots.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars: Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
Morgan is the top 4-3 end in the draft. He has both the strength and size to play outside. He can play as a good run stopper which they need terribly. The Jaguars have a big need at end after all of their recent busts. Joe Haden and Earl Thomas are passed around at this pick a lot but I think that the Jacksonville secondary is strong enough to stand for one more year until next draft but their defensive line is terrible.
11. Denver Broncos: Rolando McClain, MLB, Alabama
The Broncos desperately need a linebacker. This pick was all but assured by the releasing of Andra Davis. McClain is NFL ready and has decent speed. McClain is a good leader on the field and he will do anything and every thing to win. In Alabama he had Terence Cody giving him gigantic holes to run into so he may be a bit overrated. None the less McClain is a forced to be reckoned with. Another option here could be possibly Dan Williams if McClain is not liked for their system or if Davis is replaced another way.
12. Miami Dolphins: Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee
Williams is a huge defensive tackle who can take on multiple linemen at a time. In Miami he would be able to fill the gapping hole at nose tackle, and make some bigger ones for the linebackers. Williams is the consensus third defensive tackle after Suh and McCoy for all the right reasons. Besides his size, he had quick feet to shed the lineman and get to the quarterback.
13. San Francisco 49ers: Joe Haden, CB, Florida
Haden is the top corner in this draft. He can cover and tackle, and has big play ability. He did not have a good 40 time at his combine but he can still be a good corner at the next level. This pick could also be CJ Spiller but corner is a bigger need than running back because the 49ers already have Gore.
14. Seattle Seahawks: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
Clausen was actually considered the top quarterback until some people from sports networks came in and said that Bradford is better. Barely anyone knows that Clausen had a terrific pro-day that was as good as if not better than Bradford"s pro-day. He was throwing extremely accurately even with his toe injury. Watching him throw you could tell that the injury still was hurting him because he tried not to push off it as much. The Seahawks traded for Charlie Whitehurst who is fighting for the staring job. However, if somehow Clausen falls this far he will be the pick.
15. New York Giants: C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
Spiller falls to 15 because all of the other talent falling. This falling talent includes Haden and Clausen who should both be in the top 10. Some people will absolutely love this pick and others would smash their televisions if this happened. Spiller brings everything that you want in a player to the table. He is a star returner who can break a touchdown on any play. He is amazing in the run game and can turn the Giants back into a run first team. He is a good blocker on passing downs and is a great pass catcher.
16. Tennessee Titans: Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan
Graham is a very good end but is a reach at this point in the draft. The only reason he goes here is the gapping whole the Titans have at end.
17. San Francisco 49ers: Mike Iupati, G, Idaho
Iupati is the top guard in this class. He can do everything that a guard should, and he may be able to play tackle if needed. If the 49ers don't address the offensive line with 13 this is the guaranteed pick.
18. Pittsburgh Steelers: Maurkice Pouncey, G/C, Florida
Pouncey can play both guard and center very effectively. The guards are very old on the o-line and need to get younger before people start retiring. This pick can also be Thomas or Mays.
19. Atlanta Falcons: Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri
The Falcons did not fill their need at OLB last year so they try to get it done this year. Whichever OLB they get should have some big holes from Peria Jerry, assuming that he is a hit. Weatherspoon orders the defense around like he is a MLB and rushes the passer like a Defensive End.
20. Houston Texans: Earl Thomas, S, Texas
The Texans secondary is absolutely terrible. If this pick is not a DB I will rank the Texans a lot lower in my Power Rankings. I think Earl Thomas can go as high as pick 10 to the Jaguars. Thomas is a ball hawking safety who is more than capable of playing corner.
21. Cincinnati Bengals: Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
Gresham is by far the best tight end in this class. He has the speed to break long plays. The hands to be a consistent target. And he has the skills to block linebackers. His injury last year is a set back and his stock did take a hit but he should be a great tight end someday soon. The Bengals need for a tight end or any weapons is huge, so this is a great pick.
22. New England Patriots: Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas
Kindle is not your traditional pass rusher. He is not just projected a DE/OLB but he played and excelled in both positions in college. He has amazing speed to rush the passer and always seems to know where the ball is. The Patriots need a pass rush badly so they get it here.
23. Green Bay Packers: Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers
Davis is a good prospect coming out of college with some nice upside. Davis has the skills to be a top 10 talent but his off the field issues make him go down the draft boards of many. The Packers can't keep letting Rodgers get hit from every direction. Davis may not start right away because the Packers re-signed Tauscher and Clifton but look for him to definitely start in 2011.
24. Philadelphia Eagles: Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State
The Eagles are trying to get younger while they are still good, which isn't a bad idea, but they can't trade away starters without having a replacement in hand. The Eagles get their corner to start under Samuel with this pick with Wilson. Wilson is the consensus 2nd CB in the draft and is the obvious pick here. He had a tremendous Senior Bowl and combine.
25. Baltimore Ravens: Jared Odrick, DT/DE, Penn State
When it comes to playing on the line he can do it all. He can pass rush and stop the run, and he can play in and out. This pick is both BPA and need because the Ravens need a new defensive lineman to replace Dwan Edwards.
26. Arizona Cardinals: Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB, TCU
At TCU Hughes played end, but at the next level he is more likely to play outside linebacker because of his lack of size. He is 6'1 255 lbs. Going against 350 lbs. linemen, thats not that big. He specialized in pass rushing and did not play very good run support. If it turns out that he can't play every down in the NFL he can possibly play on passing downs only.
27. Dallas Cowboys: Nate Allen, S, South Florida
This has to be the worst possible situation for the Cowboys, and they would likely trade down... maby to someone who wants Tebow? But in our mocks we hold a policy of no trades. The Cowboys gave Nate Allen a 1st round grade so this is obviously a possibility. The Cowboys did not give Mays a 1st round grade so that rules him out of this pick. I am not saying Allen is not a good player, because he is, he just isn't worth a 1st round pick.
28. San Diego Chargers: Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State
Ryan Mathews is a good running back who can run in and out. He has the strength to break tackles and the speed to run from defensive backs... sound a bit like Tomlinson doesn't he?
29. New York Jets: Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
Golden is a great WR who has some of the best vision that I've ever seen in a receiver. He reminds me and everyone else of Steve Smith (Carolina). At this point the Jets can only get Golden, another receiver, or Taylor Mays.
30. Minnesota Vikings: Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers
McCourty is commonly tied for the third best corner in this draft with Jackson (Alabama) and Robinson (Florida State). He has good intangibles and can become a good corner one day. The Vikings need for a cornerback is great due to Winfield's rapid aging.
31. Indianapolis Colts: Rodger Saffold, G/OT, Indiana
Saffold is a good offensive lineman who should help the recent demise of the Colt's line. Saffold is not commonly said to be a 1st round prospect but when you go towards the end you have to reach down into the barrel and see what you get.
32. New Orleans Saints: Brian Price, DT, UCLA
Bet you never thought that the Saints would be picking here before this season! Well me neither. The Saints don't have any gapping holes but could use some Defensive line help. Before the combine Price was predicted to be picked around 15 (Giants) or 16 (Titans), that is a long way to fall. Really any defensive lineman could be the pick here.
